    Notes: The lungs and hearts of 15 swine were surgically harvested intact and studied in the fresh state. The lymphatics of the lung and mediastinum were cannulated and contrast medium was introduced by retrograde injection to identify the visceral pleural lymphatics and deep lymphatics of the lung. Radiographic x-ray, CT, MR, and color photographic images were obtained. Collateralization, extravasation (bronchorrhea), perivascular stasis, and circumvention were demonstrated. Lymphatic communication with the contralateral lung, thoracic duct, heart, and the diaphragm was demonstrated. The findings correlate with the lymphangiographic display of lymphedema of the extremities, obstruction to lymph flow secondary to congenital abnormalities, trauma, tumor, and infections. Our results support the view that stents and/or large bore needles may be introduced into the superficial lymphatics of the lung. The lymphatics of the lung may be anastomosed post lung transplantation and thus possibly reduce passive congestion that occurs in the early postoperative period. The authors postulate that tumor cells and infectious agents may be spread from one lung to the other by the anatomical pathways demonstrated.

    Notes: A set of non-linear and coupled equations governing the thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body undergoing simple shearing deformations is integrated in time by using the forward-difference Galerkin finite-element (FDGFE) method and the Crank-Nicolson-Galerkin finite-element (CNGFE) method. In the latter scheme the number of unknown functions is increased so that the governing equations contain only first-order spatial derivatives. It is shown that the solutions obtained by the two methods agree qualitatively; however, the CNGFE method seems to introduce some damping into the system for non-polar materials, but none for dipolar materials.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the surgeon's tying techique on knot security using 0 and 2-0 monofilament and multifilament nylon sutures. Using an Instron® Tensile Tester and a portable tensiometer, knot security was achieved with these sutures using four-throw square knots (1=1=1=1). After didactic and psychomotor skill training, medical students were taught to construct the four-throw square knot using either a two-hand tie or an instrument tie. Using the portable tensionmeter, their knot tying techniques were judged to be superior to those used by surgeons. The surgeon's faulty technique can easily be corrected by didactic information and psychomotor skill training. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Peak absorbance changes correlated to changes in species concentration have been the norm in applied spectroscopy, while baseline shifts have been more of an inconvenience. Taking the first or second derivative of the spectra eliminates these baseline shifts. However, with multivariate techniques becoming more readily available, repeatable baseline changes may now be monitored and correlated to specific physical changes. This concept has been studied by monitoring the concentration of titanium dioxide (TiO2), a white inorganic filler, in molten poly(ethylene terepthalate) (PET). Various mixtures of filled and unfilled PET resins were run through a single-screw extruder, and near infrared spectra were collected in-line by using a flow cell, housing two fiber-optic probes, and mounted downstream of the extruder. The presence of titanium dioxide caused the scattering of light that resulted in a systematic baseline shift. The baseline shifts were correlated to the TiO2 concentration data. Multivariate techniques involving the use of singular value decomposition (SVD) to perform partial least squares regression (PLS) were applied to quantitatively determine TiO2 content in the PET melt stream. Standard error of prediction (SEP) values of about 1% were obtained for a model based on two factors.

    Notes: A non-destructive method for the analysis of materials using gamma ray-induced fluorescent x-ray emission has been developed. In this method, special preparation of very thin samples in which the absorption of the incident gamma rays and the emitted fluorescent x-rays is negligible, is not needed, and the absorption correction is determined experimentally. A suitable choice of the incident gamma ray energies is made to minimise enhancement effects through selective photoionization of the elements in the sample. The method is applied to the analysis of a typical sample of the soldering material using 279 keV and 59.5 keV gamma rays from 203Hg and 241Am radioactive sources respectively. The results of the analysis are found to agree well with those obtained from the chemical analysis.

    Notes: Results of experiments on short lengths of nylon 66 and PET monofilament specimens, subjected to lateral compressive force between two parallel platens, are described. In the experimental procedure the change in the compressed diameter and the area of contact were determined as a function of the applied force. From these data elastic moduli in lateral compression were estimated. The load-deformation behavior beyond the elastic range exhibited a yield-like phenomenon. SEM examination of the deformed specimen suggest the possible modes of deformation in the post-yield behavior. It is inferred that the yield occurs due to concentration of deformation along the maximum shear planes. The deformed specimens also show specific forms of fracture initiation and growth.

    Notes: A symbolic computer language SMP* is employed to analytically solve sets of first-order linear differential equations which occur in kinetic rate-reaction studies. The solutions studied are fully analytic functions of time and the rate constants. Two typical systems are studied: the first contains four species and four rate constants, corresponding to four parallel and consecutive first-order reactions; and the second contains four species and six rate constants, including two additional reverse reactions. These analytic functions allow insight into the mechanism, analytic expressions for the rate constants, and more rapid and precise solutions for the species concentrations than a completely numerical solution of the differential rate equations themselves. The results of the first system are applied to a recent experimental study of enzyme kinetics in which constituent amino acid residues of an enzyme are photooxidized and the corresponding catalytic activity measured with time. A second application of the SMP gives rise to a rapid semianalytic method for obtaining the values of the four and six exponentially nonlinear rate constants from the experimental data.

    Notes: The coupled system of equations governing the thermomechanical deformations of a viscoelastic sheet while it is being cold rolled is solved numerically. The pertinent energy equation is solved by the finite difference method and the mechanical problem is solved by the finite element method using uniform first order rectangular elements. The developed computer program enables one to compute the complete deformation and temperature fields in the sheet. Results presented graphically include the temperature distribution, the stress distribution at the middle surface, the contact pressure distribution and the asymmetric surface deformation of the sheet.
