Notes: Block copolymers of styrene and α-methylstyrene were obtained by a cationic mechanism involving a single-step addition in the m-chloroperbenzoic acid/liquid sulfur dioxide system. This result was possible because of the difference in the reactivity of these monomers in the temperatures of -40°C, -60°C, and -78°C. Under these temperature conditions α-methylstyrene is more reactive than styrene. The composition of the block copolymers was determined by NMR and TGA analysis in fractionated samples.

Notes: PSP-l, a 13 kDa protein purified from boar seminal plasma, was found to have about 50% amino acid sequence homology with a family of zona pellucida-binding proteins known as spermadhesins. These proteins are produced by the accessory gland(s) of the male reproductive tract and coat the spermatozoa during ejaculation. In this study, we have investigated the possible biological functions of PSP-I using a solid-phase protein binding assay and its site of synthesis using both Western blot and immunocytochemical analyses. PSP-I was found to bind a number of proteins including endo-β-galactosidase digested ZP3, soybean trypsin inhibitor, lgA, lgG and α-casein, indicating that it may have multiple functions. The protein or carbohydrate structures were not critical in the binding, since polyvinyl sulfate could effectively inhibit the binding of PSP-l to these proteins. Western blot analysis using specific antiserum to PSP-l showed that the protein was present in the seminal vesicle but not in the testes, epididymis or prostate. The protein was revealed by immunocytochemical analysis in the epithelium of seminal vesicles but not in the testes or the epididymis. It is concluded that PSP-I is synthesized by the epithelium of the seminal vesicles, secreted into the semen during ejaculation, and may be involved in various reproductive functions, such as preventing premature acrosome reaction and immunosuppression. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: A critical look at the possibility of controlling the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of polyolefins by combining metallocene/methylalumoxane (MAO) catalysts is offered. Catalysts investigated were bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride (Cp2ZrCl2), its titanium and hafnium analogues (Cp2TiCl2 and Cp2HfCl2), as well as rac-ethylenebis(indenyl)zirconium dichloride (Et(Ind)2ZrCl2). As observed by other researchers, the MWD of polyethylene can be manipulated by combining soluble catalysts, which on their own produce polymer with narrow MWD but with different average molecular weights. Combined in slurry polymerization reactors, the catalysts in consideration produce ethylene homopolymer just as they would independently. Unimodal or bimodal MWDs can be obtained. This effect can be mimicked by blending polymers produced by the individual catalysts. We demonstrate how a variability in catalyst activity translates into a variability in MWD when mixing soluble catalysts in polymerization. Such a variability in MWD must be considered when setting goals for MWD control. We introduce a more quantitative approach to controlling the MWD using this method. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: An O(h6) method for the interpolation of harmonic functions in rectangular domains is described and analyzed, The method is based on an earlier cubic spline technique [N. Papamichael and J.R. Whiteman, BIT 14, 452-459 (1974)], and makes use of recent results concerning the a posteriori correction of interpolatory cubic splines.

Notes: A system is described for the selection of DNA sequences showing promoter activity in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae using a heterologous reporter enzyme which is efficiently secreted by the yeast host. A multicopy shuttle plasmid of the YEp-type was constructed so as to carry multiple unique cloning sites at the 5′ end of the Aspergillus awamori glucoamylase cDNA. Glucoamylase can only be expressed upon insertion at one of these unique cloning sites of a DNA fragment from any source, provided it is endowed with promoter function in S. cerevisiae. As the glucoamylase signal-peptide is functional in S. cerevisiae, the enzyme is efficiently secreted by the yeast transformants. This phenotype can be very easily detected on plate assays and accurately quantified by spectrophotometric analysis of the culture supernatant. Since S. cerevisiae naturally lacks amylolytic activity, any wild-type strain can be used as a host in this system. To evaluate the system, a DNA pool of random fusions was created by ligating sau 3A digested S. cerevisiae genomic DNA to the BglII-linearized vector. The resulting hybrid plasmids were transformed into S. cerevisiae and several transformants secreting glucoamylase to varying degrees were obtained.

Notes: A 17·6 kb DNA fragment from the right arm of chromosome VII of Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been sequenced and analysed. The sequence contains twelve open reading frames (ORFs) longer than 100 amino acids. Three genes had already been cloned and sequenced: CCT, ADE3 and TR-I. Two ORFs are similar to other yeast genes: G7722 with the YAL023 (PMT2) and PMT1 genes, encoding two integral membrane proteins, and G7727 with the first half of the genes encoding elongation factors 1γ, TEF3 and TEF4. Two other ORFs, G7742 and G7744, are most probably yeast orthologues of the human and Paracoccus denitrificans electron-transferring flavoproteins (β chain) and of the Escherichia coli phosphoserine phosphohydrolase. The five remaining identified ORFs do not show detectable homology with other protein sequences deposited in data banks. The sequence has been deposited in the EMBL data library under Accession Number Z49133.

Notes: The effect of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl mercaptoacetate) (EVASH) on the compatibilization of nylon-6 (PA6)/low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was investigated. EVASH was prepared from hydrolyzed EVA through an esterification reaction with mer-captoacetic acid. Mechanical properties, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy results are discussed. The mechanical properties were improved with the addition of EVASH. The compatibilizing agent also affects the crystallinity degree of both components of the blend, as indicated by the results obtained from DSC studies. The addition of EVASH results in a reduced dispersed-phase particle size. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In this paper an initial-boundary-value problem in one-space dimension is studied for the Broadwell model extended to a gas mixture undergoing bimolecular reactions. Techniques of semigroup of bounded positive operators in a suitable Banach space are used to prove existence and uniqueness of the solution on bounded time intervals whose length depends on the initial data. © 1998 B.
