    Notes: A new “push/pull” model has been developed to explain synergistic effects observed in a system in which a chiral stationary phase (CSP) is used in combination with its homologous chiral mobile phase additive (CMPA). The model predicts the beneficial CMPA enantiomer and the counterproductive CMPA enantiomer a priori. Thus, an (R)-CSP will obtain positive synergism from a homologous (S)-CMPA and negative synergism from a homologous (R)-CMPA. The reverse is true for an (S)-CSP. The importance of structural homology between the CSP and the CMPA is demonstrated. Furthermore, the analysis time is decreased relative to the use of a CSP alone, because the retention time of the analyte peaks decreases when the CMPAs are used. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Using a flourescence-detected ethidium displacement assay, the calf thymus DNA complexation properties of 27 mono-, di-, tri-, tetra- and hexacationic polyamines were determined. The DNA-binding affinity of these polyamine compounds increased with increasing cationic charge on the polyamine. Although most of the compounds exhibited no base pair binding selectivity, two of the tricationic polyamines possessing additional neutral amine groups exhibited approximately tenfold GC binding selectivities.

    Notes: The design and development of a mu8ltirate software sensor for use in the chemical process industry are presented. The measurements of process outputs that arrive at different sampling rates are formally accommodated into the estimation strategy by using rhwe multirate formulation of the iterated extended kalman filter. Measurement delays associated with some of the process outputs are included in the system description by addition of delayed states. Observability issues associated with state and parameter estimation in a multirate framework are discussed and modified measurement equations are proposed for systems with delayed measurements to ensure relatively “strong” system observability. The evaluation of the proposed multirate state and parameter estimator through simulations and an experimental application on afed batch fermentation system gave satisfactory performance.

    Notes: Sedimentation and consolidation of suspensions of fine particles were analyzed by integrating experimental measurement of properties in a centrifuge with a comprehensive numerical model. The yield stress and settling velocity for tailings from tar sands extraction were determined experimentally as a function of the volume fraction of solids. The evaluated state functions were used to simulate batch settling and consolidation, and the results compare well with long-term settling tube tests. This approach is very attractive where gravity sedimentation may take many years, and it allows prediction of the rate of clear water production, total time for sedimentation and consolidation, and the maximum concentration of solids.Scaling of the sedimentation between centrifuge and field conditions is discussed. Conversion of permeability-void ratio relationships from geotechnical experiments to state functions of hindered settling velocity is demonstrated, allowing the use of data derived from a variety of experimental techniques.

    Notes: The rate of loss of the antioxidant 2-tertiary-butyl-4-methoxy phenol (BHA) from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was determined using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The rate of loss was found to follow a first-order expression. Almost all of the antioxidant was lost (〉95 percent) within 1 day at 50°C, within 3 days at 40°C, and within 7 days at 30°C. The controlling parameter for mass transfer of the antioxidant was found to be volatilization rather than diffusion.

    Notes: The diffusivities and the vapor-liquid equilibrium coefficients of two organic components, 1-hexanol and 2-butanone, were measured in concentrated maltodextrin solutions using newly developed techniques. Accurate determination of these quantities required complete material balances of the two phases and control of the water concentration in the experimental cell. The diffusion coefficients of these solutes correlated with solution viscosity to the 1/2 power over a range of temperatures and concentrations. Other literature data for diffusion coefficients in concentrated malto-dextrin and sugar solutions are shown to correlate with viscosity.

    Notes: A theoretical model comprising the processes of micropore, macropore and surface diffusion was derived and applied to the dynamics of adsorption of CO2 on a single activated-carbon particle. The effects of a nonlinear isotherm (Langmuir), particle nonisothermality and concentration dependence of the surface diffusivity were also incorporated. The theoretical model was fitted to a preliminary set of adsorption experimental data (two particle sizes, and various temperatures and concentrations) to determine the diffusion coefficients. The validity of the theoretical model was checked by using the model, with fitted diffusivities, to simulate dynamic adsorption curves at conditions different from those of the preliminary fitting data set. These model simulations were found to predict the experimental data in a satisfactory manner.
