Notes: A series of seven coals of different ranks and from various locations were heated in air under relatively mild conditions to measure the rates of oxidation and the production of carbonic gases in the effluent stream. The gas flow rate, coal particle size, and reactor temperature were changed as independent variables. Each sample was exposed for from 6 to 9 hr under atmospheric pressure at temperatures in the range of 200° to 250°C. The results show two kinds of rate behavior depending primarily on the relative porosity of the coal under study. The small pore coals followed the expectations of the earlier Kam-Hixson-Perlmutter (KHP) model, but the large pore coals gave rates sensitive to transport effects. Correlations were also obtained on the ratio of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide produced and on the relationship between the carbon content of an exposed coal and its heating value.

Notes: In a previous paper it was shown that the vulcanization obtained with ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer is equivalent or superior to that obtained with ethylene-propylene copolymer when a peroxide-dimethacrylate coagent cure system was used. In order to determine the effect of the unsaturation on the physical properties in the terpolymer, the terpolymer had been hydrogenated to remove the double bonds. Infrared spectra and bromination were used to check the extent of hydrogenation. Tensile strength, Shore A hardness, per cent elongation, and modulus indicated no decrease in vulcanization efficiency after hydrogenation. The data show that the unsaturation in the terpolymer does not contribute to the vulcanization cure with the peroxide-dimethacrylate coagent curing system.

Notes: The NMR spectra of the cycloaddition adducts between tetracyanoethylene oxide (TCNEO) and norbornadiene derivatives have been studied. It was shown that there was significant long-range coupling between 7-anti and endo hydrogens in the adducts and that this long-range coupling was solvent dependent. Based on the present study it is concluded that the long-range coupling between endo and anti hydrogens can be as high as 4·1 Hz when an electronegative substituent is attached to the carbon which bears endo hydrogen.

Notes: The electron-impact-induced ionization and fragmentation of six C6H10 structural isomers have been studied in order to determine the effect of isomerism upon their mass spectrometric behavior. The 70 eV mass spectra, metastable transitions and appearance potentials of the principal ions are reported. Significant differences between the mass spectra of the six isomers were observed; however, metastable transition and appearance potential data indicate that the fragmentation path-ways are the same for all the C6H10 molecules. Experimentally determined ionization potentials for the structural isomers are presented and compared to ionization potentials calculated by the bond orbital method. Utilizing fragmentation pathways deduced from general features in the mass spectra and from observed metastable transitions, we calculated heats of formation (ΔHf) for the observed principal ions and compared these values to ΔHf values for isomeric ions from other molecules.

Notes: Twenty-one commercial plastics were exposed to 10% red blood cell suspension in buffered saline and their hemolytic effect was determined. The depression in surface tension of physiological saline solution exposed to the plastic surfaces was recorded and brought into relationship with their hemolytic behavior. It has been shown that both effects occur simultaneously. It is proposed to use the depression in surface tension of saline exposed to prospective plastic applicants as a bloodcindependent screening test for evaluation of plastics which are intended to be exposed to a cardiovascular environment.
