Notes: Abstract Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a plasma glycoprotein that facilitates the transfer of cholesteryl esters, phospholipids and triglycerides between the lipoproteins, and regulates plasma high-density lipoprotein levels. We examined CETP-like immunolabeling in non-neurological and Alzheimer's disease (AD) liver and brain tissues. The anti-CETP antibodies showed positive staining in round cells in the liver sinusoid and in brain astrocytes. In the brains of non-neurological cases, positively stained astrocytes were preferentially distributed in the white matter. In AD tissue, many reactive astrocytes in the gray matter as well as the white matter astrocytes had CETP-like immunoreactivity. CETP-positive astrocytes may play a role for AD pathology such as tissue repair.

Notes: Abstract To investigate oxidative effects of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) on the liver, rats were challenged by the reagent with a dose range of 10 to 40 mg/kg. With lower dose levels, protective responses were prominent, such as elevation of the hepatic glutathione and metallothionein (MT) levels. Increased activities were also evident of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), and malic enzyme. In the high dose range, however, toxic responses, such as increases in lipid peroxide levels in liver and serum, and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and ketone bodies in serum became marked. Some of the protective responses became less marked at the highest dose. Catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities in the liver were also inhibited by NDMA treatment. On the other hand, when NDMA was injected as a series of doses (10 mg/kg on four separate occasions), the effects were less marked, and the hepatic levels of MT and lipid peroxide remained unchanged even after the 4th injection. Only the increase in G6PD activity was more marked after four times repeated injection than after a single injection. These results suggest that oxidative and hepatotoxic effects of NDMA are more moderate when given in repeated doses than in a single dose. In contrast to the liver, elevation of MT levels was the only detectable change in the kidney.

Notes: There are many difficulties and dangers when carrying out underwater blasting in a rapid stream. The electromagnetic firing method is a special type of the remote control firing method and has a distinct advantage to the underwater blasting. The principle of this method is based on electromagnetic phenomena, the induced electromotive force by the coil which is set into the electromagnetic field is applied to fire the detonation cap.In this paper, the authors discuss the fundamental theory of the electromagnetic field caused by the exciting loop, and the effect of the conductive medium. As an example, they present the procedure and results of an actual underwater blasting work which is the first application of this technique.

Notes: Ionic conductivities of complexes of polystyrene derivatives having a spacer, —CH2O(CH2CH2O)n— (poly-(SEDEP), n = 1; poly(SDEDEP), n = 2), between backbone and pendant penta(methoxyethoxyethoxy)cyclotriphosphazene with LiClO4 were investigated as functions of temperature and salt concentration. The glass transition of temperature of poly(SEDEP) and poly(SDEDEP) was observed at -64 and -65°C, respectively. The extent of Tg elevation of the Li+-polymer complexes was not affected by the difference of spacer in the host polymers. The conductivities of the complexes exhibit non-Arrhenius temperature dependence. The conductivities of poly(SDEDEP)-Li+ complexes were somewhat higher than those of poly(SEDEP) systems and the maximum value close to 10-4 S/cm at 50°C has been achieved at [Li+]/O = 0.08. The results are compared with those obtained previously for the complexes based on polymers which have the similar structures but no spacer, and the correlation between the conduction mechanism and polymer characteristics is discussed.

Notes: The effect of molecular orientation on the linear swelling of nylon 6 caused by absorption of water was studied using two kinds of oriented films, melt drawn and cold drawn. The molecular orientation causes anisotropy in swelling at all humidities such that the swelling is larger in the orientation direction than in the directions perpendicular to it. The large contribution of crystalline orientation to this phenomenon was expected for the melt drawn film which has practically no amorphous orientation. An analysis with a two-phase morphological model reveals that the distance between the crystallites is a prominent factor controlling the degree of linear swelling, and that the anisotropy of swelling arises from the change in the distribution of crystallites due to orientation. By comparing the result for the melt drawn film with that for the cold drawn film, which has considerable amorphous orientation, it was proven that molecular orientation in the amorphous phase where swelling actually occurs does not depend so much on the degree of swelling as on the distribution of crystallites.
