    Notes: Summary The specific activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme located in the primary granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, was measured in patients with psoriasis vulgaris and compared with that in patients with atopic dermatitis and in healthy subjects. MPO catalyzes the oxidation of guaiacol into tetraguaiacol in the presence of H2O2. The activity was determined by photometric measurement of tetraguaiacol. The specific MPO activity showed no statistically significant difference between the healthy subjects and the patients with atopic dermatitis. In comparison to these two groups the specific MOP activity of the psoriatic patients showed a slight reduction which was, however, not statistically significant.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 16 Psoriatikern mit generalisierter Psoriasis, die unter oralet Retinoid-Therapie standen (1 mg/kg Körpergewicht täglich), wurden 24h, 48h, 1 Woche und 3 Wochen nach Therapiebeginn autoradiographische Untersuchungen an der befallenen und nicht befallenen Epidermis durchgeführt. Während der ersten Behandlungswoche fanden sich keine signifikanten Veränderungen der zellkinetischen Parameter, doch nach 3wöchiger Therapie kam es zu einer Minderung des gesteigerten 3H-Markierungsindex und zu einer Verkürzung der verlängerten DNS-Synthesezeit; die mittlere Generationszeit blieb weiterhin unbeeinflußt. Diese Befunde zeigen, daß orale Retinoidgaben die veränderte Zellkinetik bie Psoriasis günstig beeinflussen, und zwar sowohl in befallener als auch in nicht befallener Epidermis. Die lange Latenzzeit spricht dafür, daß das Medikament nicht unmittelbar in den Zellcyclus eingreift. Damit wird der gute additive Effekt des Retinoids in der kombinierten klinischen Anwendung mit anderen antipsoriatischen Maßnahmen (Retinoid + Anthralin, Retinoid + PUVA, Retinoid + UVB) verständlich.
    Notes: Summary In 16 patients with generalized psoriasis treated with oral retinoid (Ro 10-9359; 1 mg/kg body weight/day) autoradiographic studies were performed before, and 24h, 48h, 1 week and 3 weeks after beginning of treatment on involved and non involved epidermis. During the first week no significant changes of all cellular parameters were found. However, after 3 weeks of continuing medication the increased 3H-thymidine labelling index was markedly lowered and the prolonged DNA synthesis time was shortened; whereas, the cell cycle time remained unaffected. The findings revealed that oral retinoid has a distinct influence on epidermal cell proliferation towards normalization in both involved and non involved epidermis in psoriasis. The time needed for this effect indicates that the drug does not directly interfere with the cell cycle. It seems reasonable, therefore, to combine oral retinoids as a basic adjuvant drug with other antipsoriatic techniques, such as retinoid + anthralin, retinoid + PUVA, retinoid + UVB.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Überprüft man in Histiocytomen mit Hilfe des Nachweises der alkalischen Phosphatase den Verlauf der Capillaren, so überrascht die große Zahl der Gefäße. Von einem Zentrum erstrecken sich diese durch das ganze Histiocytom, selbst die über dem Histiocytom unter der Epidermis gelegenen Capillaren sind gewuchert. Histochemische und elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen zeigen aber, daß die Mehrzahl der Tumorzellen keine Gefäßzellen sind, sondern Fibroblasten, Histiocyten und Mastzellen. Die jüngeren Fibroblasten gleichen Elementen, die man auch bei der Wundheilung findet und die man als C-Fibroblasten bezeichnet hat.
    Notes: Summary In histiocytomas the alkaline phosphatase technique reveals a surprising number of capillaries. The capillaries branch out from the center to the periphery of the histiocytoma and even the capillaries beneath the epidermis proliferate. The cellular elements outside the capillaries, however, are fibroblasts, histiocytes and mast cells, as is revealed by various histochemical and electron microscopical examinations. Histiocytomas of short duration differ from older histiocytomas in that the former contain fibroblasts similar to those found in healing wounds (C-fibroblasts).
