    Notes: Abstract The influence of depletable amplification, group velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation due to Kerr-type nonlinearity on pulse shaping in femtosecond pulse amplification has been calculated. With gain depletion which is typical for the last stage of multi-stage amplifiers, spectral broadening occurs which, under certain conditions, can be utilized for pulse compression. This spectral broadening as well as a predicted spectral shift is compared with experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract A theoretical model of passive mode locking of colour-center lasers by an effective fast saturable absorber is presented where a hybrid saturation scheme is applied to consider the interaction of the mode-locked pulse with the gain medium. Intracavity group-velocity dispersion and Kerr-type nonlinearity are taken into account and their combined action can result in solition-like pulse shaping and shortening. Chirped steady-state solutions whose carrier frequency can be shifted with respect to the central frequency of the gain are found in a limited range of the parameters specifying the problem.

    Notes: Abstract The theory of active-passive mode-locked solid-state lasers is developed where the passive mode-locking is achieved by a nonlinear mirror. Steady-state cw numerical solutions are analyzed in detail for the case of a Nd: YAG laser. The steady-state pulse duration can be reduced by an order of magnitude as compared to the pure active mode-locking regime.

    Notes: Abstract Radiation transfer in highly scattering ceramics is described by a diffusion approximation based on the asymptotic relation of the radiant flux and the radiant energy density in material depth. In this approximation, a calculation of the effective absorption coefficient k and the radiation diffusion coefficient D is based on the measurement of normal-hemispherical transmission of specimens shaped as various-thickness disks. Taken into account are radiation field, twodimensionality, and the radiation boundary reflection effect. The optical property measurements have been performed on the experimental apparatus based on an integrating sphere, a collimated radiation source, and a twochannel data acquisition and processing system. Results of the measurements of k and D for the silica ceramic are given at room temperature.

    Notes: Abstract A radiation diffusion model is used to describe radiation transfer in highly scattering anisotropic semitransparent materials. The transmissivities of the sample disks of silica glass fiber thermal insulation of different thicknesses and orientations were measured. The samples were cut from the same insulation slab. The axis of material structure symmetry was parallel to the axis of samples in one case and perpendicular to it in the other case. The effective absorption coefficient and radiation diffusion coefficient were obtained for three wavelengths of a probing He-Ne laser, namely, 0.63, 1.15, and 3.39 µm. The spectral hemispherical absorptivity and biliemisperical reflectivity as a function of the thickness of the plane layer are calculated and presented.
