    Description: As national efforts to reduce CO 2 emissions intensify, policy-makers need increasingly specific, subnational information about the sources of CO 2 and the potential reductions and economic implications of different possible policies. This is particularly true in China, a large and economically diverse country that has rapidly industrialized and urbanized and that has pledged under the Paris Agreement that its emissions will peak by 2030. We present new, city-level estimates of CO 2 emissions for 182 Chinese cities, decomposed into 17 different fossil fuels, 46 socioeconomic sectors, and 7 industrial processes. We find that more affluent cities have systematically lower emissions per unit of gross domestic product (GDP), supported by imports from less affluent, industrial cities located nearby. In turn, clusters of industrial cities are supported by nearby centers of coal or oil extraction. Whereas policies directly targeting manufacturing and electric power infrastructure would drastically undermine the GDP of industrial cities, consumption-based policies might allow emission reductions to be subsidized by those with greater ability to pay. In particular, sector-based analysis of each city suggests that technological improvements could be a practical and effective means of reducing emissions while maintaining growth and the current economic structure and energy system. We explore city-level emission reductions under three scenarios of technological progress to show that substantial reductions (up to 31%) are possible by updating a disproportionately small fraction of existing infrastructure.

    Description: Scalable quantum computing can be achieved only if quantum bits are manipulated in a fault-tolerant fashion. Topological error correction--a method that combines topological quantum computation with quantum error correction--has the highest known tolerable error rate for a local architecture. The technique makes use of cluster states with topological properties and requires only nearest-neighbour interactions. Here we report the experimental demonstration of topological error correction with an eight-photon cluster state. We show that a correlation can be protected against a single error on any quantum bit. Also, when all quantum bits are simultaneously subjected to errors with equal probability, the effective error rate can be significantly reduced.     Description: The study reported was intended to improve the leaching rate of boron-bearing tailings, using a method of sodium roasting that uses boron-bearing tailings as the raw material and Na 2 CO 3 as the sodium agent. The effects of the roasting temperature and Na 2 CO 3 amount on the leaching rate of boron-bearing tailings are mainly evaluated. The morphology and composition of the samples after sodium roasting are analysed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that sodium roasting can significantly improve the leaching rate of boron-bearing tailings. Under the optimal conditions where roasting temperature is 950°C, Na 2 CO 3 amount is five times the theoretical amount and roasting time is 2 h, the leaching rate of boron-bearing tailings is up to 86.78%. Based on the analysis of the characterization results and the mechanism analysis of the sodium roasting process, the main reason for the increase of leaching rate is the reaction between Na 2 O produced by the decomposition of Na 2 CO 3 and the boron in boron-bearing tailings resulting in soluble sodium borate. The results provide a scientific basis for the efficient comprehensive use of boron-bearing tailings.

    Description: The influence of the addition of ethylene glycol (EG) on the pore self-ordering process in anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) membranes prepared by hard anodization (HA) was investigated. It was illustrated that EG has a substantial effect on the pore arrangement of AAO, and it was found that a smaller pore size can be obtained with an EG concentration reaching 20 wt% in aqueous electrolyte. The number of estimated defects of AAO increases significantly with an increase in EG concentration to 50 wt%. Excellent ordering of pores was realized when the samples were anodized in the 30 wt%-EG-containing aqueous electrolyte.

    Description: Mitotic fidelity is ensured by achieving biorientation on all paired chromosomes. The key signal for proper chromosome alignment is the tension between sister chromatids created by opposing poleward force from the spindles. In the budding yeast, the tension-sensing function requires that the Shugoshin protein, Shugoshin 1, be recruited to the centromeres and the neighboring pericentric regions. Concerted actions integrating proteins at centromeres and pericentromeres create highly specific Shugoshin 1 domains on mitotic chromosomes. We have previously reported that an important regulatory region on histone H3, termed the tension-sensing motif (TSM), is responsible for retaining Shugoshin 1 at pericentromeres. The TSM is negatively regulated by the acetyltransferase Gcn5p , but the underlying mechanism was elusive. In this work, we provide evidence that, when the TSM function is impaired, the histone H3 tail adopts a role that complements the damaged TSM to ensure faithful mitosis. This novel function of the H3 tail is controlled by Gcn5p , which targets selective lysine residues. Mutations to K14 and K23 ameliorate the mitotic defects resulting from TSM mutations. The restoration of faithful segregation is accompanied by regaining Shugoshin 1 access to the pericentric regions. Our data reveal a novel pathway for mitotic Shugoshin 1 recruitment and further reinforce the active role played by chromatins during their segregation in mitosis.

    Description: Purpose: Although postoperative radiotherapy is often used to maintain local control after surgical resection and chemotherapy for locally advanced non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), both locoregional failure and distant metastasis remain problematic. The mechanisms of therapeutic resistance remain poorly understood. Experimental Design: We used reverse-phase protein arrays (RPPA) to profile the baseline expression of 170 total and phosphorylated proteins in 70 NSCLC cell lines to categorize pathways that may contribute to radiation resistance. Significant markers identified by RPPA were further analyzed in tissue microarrays (TMA) of specimens from 127 patients with NSCLC who had received surgery before receiving postoperative radiotherapy. Cox regression analysis and log-rank tests were used to identify potential predictive factors. We then validated the biological function of the markers in NSCLC cell lines in vitro . Results: Of the 170 proteins or phospho-proteins profiled, a subset of 12 proteins was found to correlate with radiation response parameters. TMA analysis of the 12 proteins showing the greatest differences in expression in the RPPA analysis demonstrated that RAD50 had the strongest correlation with distant relapse-free survival, locoregional relapse-free survival, and disease-free survival in patients with NSCLC. We confirmed that knockdown of RAD50 sensitized NSCLC cells to radiation and that upregulation of RAD50 increased radioresistance in in vitro experiments.     Description: Cytotoxic chemotherapy targets elements common to all nucleated human cells, such as DNA and microtubules, yet it selectively kills tumor cells. Here we show that clinical response to these drugs correlates with, and may be partially governed by, the pretreatment proximity of tumor cell mitochondria to the apoptotic threshold, a property called mitochondrial priming. We used BH3 profiling to measure priming in tumor cells from patients with multiple myeloma, acute myelogenous and lymphoblastic leukemia, and ovarian cancer. This assay measures mitochondrial response to peptides derived from proapoptotic BH3 domains of proteins critical for death signaling to mitochondria. Patients with highly primed cancers exhibited superior clinical response to chemotherapy. In contrast, chemoresistant cancers and normal tissues were poorly primed.     Description: Type I interferons (IFN-I) are critical for antiviral immunity; however, chronic IFN-I signaling is associated with hyperimmune activation and disease progression in persistent infections. We demonstrated in mice that blockade of IFN-I signaling diminished chronic immune activation and immune suppression, restored lymphoid tissue architecture, and increased immune parameters associated with control of virus replication, ultimately facilitating clearance of the persistent infection. The accelerated control of persistent infection induced by blocking IFN-I signaling required CD4 T cells and was associated with enhanced IFN-gamma production.     Description: Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between each functional fitness (FF) domain and cognitive impairment (CI) in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. Design A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted. Setting Participants were selected by multistage stratified random sampling in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, Central China, during December 2015–May 2016. Participants A total of 2096 (1031 male and 1065 female) adults older than 65 years were included in our study. Exclusion criteria were age 〈65 years, losing self-living ability, previously diagnosed with dementia by a neurological physician, severe physical pain, congestive heart failure, dizziness and uncontrolled hypertension (exceeding 160/100 mm Hg). Primary and secondary outcome measures The Senior Fitness Test and the Mini-Mental State Examination were used to measure FF (including 30 s chair stand, 30 s arm curl, 2 min step, 8 foot up-and-go, chair sit-and-reach and back scratch) and screen CI, respectively. Activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living questionnaires were administered to evaluate functional status (FS). Results 32.16% were classified as the CI group. The results showed that the CI group had significantly lower frequency of 30 s chair stand, 30 s arm curl and 2 min step, and longer time to complete the 8 foot up-and-go, shorter chair sit-and-reach and back scratch distance than the non-CI adults (p〈0.05). Except for back scratch, older adults with moderate and high levels of FF were less likely to have CI than those with low levels, adjusted by sociodemographics, chronic disease, health condition, health behaviour and FS (p〈0.05). Conclusions The relationship between FF and CI was independent of FS decline in Chinese community-dwelling older people.
