    Abstract: This book describes the growing body of information on the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, transmission, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of Kingella kingae infections in young children. In addition, it covers experimental methods that have been developed to study the microbiology, genetics, and virulence factors of K. kingae, information that provides the foundation for new approaches to treatment and prevention of K. kingae disease. With this content in mind, excerpts from the book will be of relevance for clinicians who care for pediatric patients, for clinical microbiologists who are involved in detecting organisms in clinical specimens, and for scientists who are studying K. kingae in an effort to develop novel targets for antimicrobial therapy and new approaches to prevention. First isolated in the 1960s by Elizabeth O. King, a bacteriologist at the CDC, Kingella kingae was largely ignored over the next two decades as a human pathogen because of its uncommon recovery from patients with disease. However, in recent years K. kingae has been increasingly recognized as a clinically important pathogen in young children, and is currently recognized as the leading cause of osteoarticular infections in young children in a growing number of countries. Research into this organism has grown tremendously over the past 15 years, resulting in a better appreciation of the importance of K. kingae in pediatric patients and of the molecular mechanisms of disease

    Abstract: This volume investigates how the mitochondrial genome is transmitted, segregated, and inherited. It starts by describing mtDNA mutations and deletions and how these impact on the offspring’s well-being. It progresses to discuss how mutations to the mtDNA-nuclear-encoded transcription, replication and translational factors lead to mtDNA-depletion syndromes and how these affect cellular function and lead to the pathology of human mitochondrial disease. It also highlights the importance of the mitochondrial assembly factors and how mutations to these can lead to mitochondrial disease. The reader is then introduced to how mtDNA is transmitted through the oocyte and how stem cells can be used to study mitochondrial biogenesis and mtDNA replication and transcription in undifferentiated pluripotent and differentiating cells and how mitochondria adapt during this process. It then discusses how diseases like cancer are initiated and regulated by mutations to mitochondrial DNA and dysfunctional mitochondria. Finally, it draws on assisted reproductive technologies to discuss how some of these approaches might be adapted to prevent the transmission of mutant and deleted mtDNA from one generation to the next

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Autoren vollzogen an Kaninchen mit akuter Quecksilbervergiftung Untersuchungen des Eiweißspektrums, der Muco- und Lipoproteide Bowie der Aktivität der alkalischen Serumphosphatase. Gleichzeitig führten sie in vitro-Teste durch, um den Mechanismus zu klären, der zur Inaktivierung der Phosphatase führt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß lösliche Quecksilbersalze, ix. injiziert, eine Verminderung des Gesamteiweißes verursachen, und zwar hauptsächlich der Albumine bei gleichzeitigem Anstieg der β-Globulin-Fraktion. Es wurde eine deutliche Hebung des Mucoproteidspiegels im Blutserum beobachtet. Das Lipoproteidbild des Serums zeigee eine charakteristische Abnahme der kleinmolekularen Fraktion α zugunsten der großmolekularen Fraktionen β and γ. Quecksilber-Ionen verursachen Aktivitätsabfall der alkalischen Phosphatase durch direkte Einwirkung auf das Enzym. Die Phosphataseaktivität verhält sich umgekehrt proportional zur Hg-Ionen Konzentration. Die Inaktivierung erfolgt wahrscheinlich durch Blockierung der Amino- und Carboxylgruppen des Enzymeiweißes.
