Abstract: The past decade has seen remarkable progress in elucidating the clinical relevance of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). Evidence from numerous clinical studies has unequivocally demonstrated the importance of CTCs as harbingers of poor outcome. Despite these advances, the molecular nature of CTCs remains elusive. This is in part due to the difficulty in isolating pure CTCs away from blood cells. Recent advancements in rare-cell technology have provided solutions to the once daunting task of isolating extremely rare CTCs in the blood of cancer patients. This book presents different novel approaches for detection and purification of CTCs. In addition, the readers are introduced to new technologies for molecular profiling of CTCs, including techniques to overcome limitations posed by the paucity of cells and the biomolecules available for downstream molecular analysis. This book is particularly relevant to scientists and academicians who are interested in the field of CTC research. It provides an overview of the recent technological advances in CTC isolation and profiling. This work also includes discussions on pertinent issues regarding the biology of CTCs, and their potential utility as liquid biopsy for personalized medicine. We hope that this book stimulate further research and help advance our understanding of the molecular biology of CTCs

Abstract: In the past decade, we have experienced an explosion of new information about cancer therapeutic targets. Many of the targets have been validated by the discovery and approval of new medicines which have been approved for the treatment of cancer. On the heels of these successes, innumerable new targets and new potential therapeutics are being developed by many different groups including government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, academic institutions, and individual investigators. Understanding the expanding "universe" of cancer therapies is therefore becoming impossible and no single source exists which serves as a reference for the involved parties. Further, the interested parties have vastly different areas of expertise, from focused laboratory based science, to clinical research, to corporate and regulatory oversight. The text would be updated every two years, more often depending on pace of change, interest and sales. While useful online, this reference book would likely be kept in hard copy as well

Abstract: There are numerous types of liver disease that may be due to toxic agents (such as alcohol or drugs), infectious agents including viruses, congenital conditions and even poor dietary patterns. It has been suggested that there are over 100 different types. As the consequences of liver failure can be devastating it is important that appropriate diagnosis and monitoring is carried out. Much of this characterisation entails the use of biological indicators, i.e biomarkers. Biomarkers in Liver Disease embraces a holistic approach by combining detailed information on different conditions that affect the liver and the use of biomarkers. Biomarkers are described in terms of conventional, new and emerging analytes, techniques, platforms and applications. It covers the latest knowledge, trends and innovations. New platforms are described which combine advances in biomedical sciences, physics, computing and chemistry

Transient Receptor Potential Canonical Channels and Brain Diseases (2017)
Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Keywords: Medicine ; Cancer Research ; Neurosciences ; Pharmacology ; Biochemistry ; Biomedicine ; Neurosciences ; Biochemistry, general ; Cancer Research ; Pharmacology/Toxicology ; Springer eBooks
Description / Table of Contents: TRP channel classification -- TRPC channel structure and properties -- TRPC channel downstream signaling cascades -- TRPC Channels in Health and Disease -- TRPC channels and programmed cell death -- TRPC channels and stroke -- TRPC channels and Alzheimer’s disease -- TRPC channels and Parkinson’s disease -- TRPC channels and neuron development, plasticity and activities -- TRPC channels and brain inflammation -- TRPC channels and Epilepsy -- TRPC channels and mental disorders -- TRPC channels and cell proliferation -- TRPC channels and glioma
Abstract: This book discusses the latest findings on the physiological and pathological functions of transient receptor potential canonical/classical (TRPC) proteins in the brain. In addition to reviewing the functions of TRPCs in brain development and neuron transmission, it mainly covers the potential roles of TRPCs in brain disorders. TRPC proteins belong to the TRP channel superfamily, which has around 30 members. Just like TRP channels, TRPCs are non-selectively permeable to cations, with a selectivity of calcium over sodium that varies among different members. The TRPC subfamily consists of six members, grouped on the basis of the similarities in gene sequence and protein structure in mammalians. What sets TRPCs apart from other subfamilies in TRPs is that their activation, stimulated by a membrane receptor-phospholipid C (PLC) cascade, contributes to the slow and sustained elevation of intracellular free calcium. Calcium ions, one of the most important types of second messengers, mediate a variety of physiological functions in the brain, including progenitor cell proliferation, dendritic formation, synaptic transmission and neuronal survival. All TRPCs except TRPC7 have been found in various regions of the brain, including the cerebrum, cerebellum, forebrain and hippocampus. This book provides students and investigators with comprehensive information on the regulation, function and potential of TRPCs and brain diseases in order to attract more attention to this field

Abstract: This manual offers a stand-alone reading companion, unique in simplifying the practical components of Bioinformatics in a unique and user-friendly manner. It covers the practical component of syllabi used at most leading universities and discusses the most extensively used tools and methodologies in Bioinformatics. Research in the biological sciences has made tremendous strides in recent years due in part to the increased automation in data generation. At the same time, storing, managing and interpreting huge volumes of data has become one of the most challenging tasks for scientists. These two aspects have ultimately necessitated the application of computers, giving rise to a highly interdisciplinary discipline–Bioinformatics. Despite the richness of bioinformatics resources and methods, the exposure of life sciences undergraduates and postgraduates to bioinformatics is extremely limited. Though the internet offers various tools for free, and provides guides for using them, it fails to help users interpret the processed data. Moreover, most sites fail to update their help pages to accommodate software upgrades. Though the market is flooded with books discussing the theoretical concepts in Bioinformatics, a manual of this kind is rarely found. The content developed to meet the needs of readers from diverse background and to incorporate the syllabi of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at various universities

Abstract: Epigenetic mechanisms (DNA modifications, histone alterations and non-coding RNAs) are crucial for transcriptional regulation and alterations of the “physiological epigenome” are increasingly associated with human diseases. During the last decade the emerging field of neuroepigenomics have started to impact tremendously in areas such learning and memory, addiction or neurodegeneration. This expert volume covers the role of epigenetic molecular mechanism in regulation of central nervous system’s function, one of the most exciting areas of contemporary molecular neuroscience. The book describes the current knowledge on the epigenetic basis of human disease covering the complete lifespan: from neurodevelopment/childhood (Rett Syndrome, Rubinstein-Taybi, autism), adolescence (eating disorders, drug addiction, anxiety), adulthood (depression, schizophrenia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease) and elderly (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease). The book also covers the three major players on neuroepigenomic mechanisms: histones alterations, DNA modifications and non-coding RNAs, their roles at the molecular and cellular level and the impact of their alterations on neuronal function and behavior. Finally, a special chapter on state-of-the-art technologies helps the reader not only to understand epigenetic driven changes in human cognition and diseases but also the methodology that will help to generate paradigm shifts on our understanding of brain function and the role of the neuroepigenome in human diseases

Abstract: The present volume of Epigenetics and Human Health is devoted to the patho-epigenetics of viral and microbial infections, an exiting new field of disease-related epigenetic research. As recognized during the past years, epigenetic reprogramming of pathogen and host genome functions – the latter frequently induced by pathogens – plays an important role in many infectious processes. Beyond their immediate relevance for pathogen proliferation and obligatorily associated symptoms, such alterations frequently contribute to severe additional complications, such as the development of immunodeficiency, cancer and various chronic disorders. This holds in particular for epigenetic dysregulation of host gene expression induced by latent infections. The present book summarizes current knowledge of the mechanisms underlying epigenetic changes caused by viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoan infections and their impact on human health
