Abstract: This book is the second of two volumes that offer a comprehensive, up-to-date account of current knowledge regarding high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the changes that occur in HDL under different conditions, the clinical applications of HDL, and means of enhancing HDL functionality. In this volume, the focus is on the improvement of HDL, enhancement of its functionality, and the use of HDL for therapeutic purposes. In the first section, up-to-date information is provided on such topics as the tumor regression-promoting and antidiabetic activities of reconstituted HDL containing V156K apolipoprotein A-I, the enhancement of HDL effects by high doses of vitamin C, the benefits derived from incorporation of growth hormones 1 and 2 into rHDL, and the biological functions of omega-3 linolenic acid in rHDL. The enhancement of HDL functionality by policosanol and the resultant benefits are thoroughly examined in a separate section. Readers will also find the latest information on clinical applications of HDL. Here, specific topics include the enhancement of adenoviral gene delivery and the delivery of rapamycin. In documenting the latest knowledge in this field, this volume will be of interest to both researchers and clinicians

Abstract: The Encyclopedia of Biophysics is envisioned both as an easily accessible source of information and as a route into the scientific literature. It consists of two parts, Systems and Techniques. In the Techniques sections, each of the wide range of methods which fall under the heading of Biophysics are explained in detail, together with the value and the limitations of the information each provides. Techniques covered range from diffraction (X-ray, electron and neutron), through a wide range of spectroscopic methods (X-ray, optical, EPR, NMR) to imaging (from electron microscopy to live cell imaging and MRI), as well as computational and simulation approaches. In the Systems sections, biophysical approaches to particular biological systems or problems – from protein and nucleic acid structure to membranes, ion channels and receptors – are described. These sections, which have an emphasis on the integration of the different techniques, therefore provide an entry into Biophysics from the biological more than from the technique-oriented physical/chemical direction. Thus the Encyclopedia is intended to provide a resource both for biophysicists interested in approaches outside their immediate sub-discipline and for people coming to biophysics from either the physical or biological direction. Each of the sections will include concise introductions to the major concepts and methods, and outlines of more specific topics, in each case with links to a limited number of carefully selected key reviews and/or papers in the scientific literature. There will also be short definitions explaining key terms. Extensive cross-referencing (hyperlinks in the online version) between different articles will allow access to related topics in a user-friendly manner and time-efficient manner, including hyperlinks to key articles in the scientific literature

Abstract: This edited book explores the use of technology to enable us to visualise the life sciences in a more meaningful and engaging way. It will enable those interested in visualisation techniques to gain a better understanding of the applications that can be used in visualisation, imaging and analysis, education, engagement and training. The reader will be able to explore the utilisation of technologies from a number of fields to enable an engaging and meaningful visual representation of the biomedical sciences, with a focus in this volume related to anatomy, and clinically applied scenarios. The first six chapters have an anatomical focus examining digital technologies and applications to enhance education. The first examines the history and development of ultrasound, applications in an educational setting, and as a point-of-care ultrasound at the bedside. The second chapter presents a transferable workflow methodology in creating an interactive educational and training package to enhance understanding of the circadian rhythm. The third chapter reviews tools and technologies, which can be used to enhance off-campus learning, and the current range of visualisation technologies like virtual, augmented and mixed reality systems. Chapter four discusses how scanning methodologies like CT imagery, can make stereoscopic models. The fifth chapter describes a novel way to reconstruct 3D anatomy from imaging datasets and how to build statistical 3D shape models, described in a clinical context and applied to diagnostic disease scoring. The sixth chapter looks at interactive visualisations of atlases in the creation of a virtual resource, for providing next generation interfaces. The seventh and eight chapters discuss neurofeedback for mental health education and interactive visual data analysis (applied to irritable bowel disease) respectively. The final two chapters examine current immersive technologies –virtual and augmented reality, with the last chapter detailing virtual reality in patients with dementia. This book is accessible to a wide range of users from faculty and students, developers and computing experts, the wider public audience. It is hoped this will aid understanding of the variety of technologies which can be used to enhance understanding of clinical conditions using modern day methodologies

Abstract: This volume provides a collection of contemporary perspectives on using activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) for biological discoveries in protein science, microbiology, and immunology. A common theme throughout is the special utility of ABPP to interrogate protein function and small-molecule interactions on a global scale in native biological systems. Each chapter showcases distinct advantages of ABPP applied to diverse protein classes and biological systems. As such, the book offers readers valuable insights into the basic principles of ABPP technology and how to apply this approach to biological questions ranging from the study of post-translational modifications to targeting bacterial effectors in host-pathogen interactions

Abstract: This book is the first of two volumes that offer a comprehensive, up-to-date account of current knowledge regarding high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the changes that occur in HDL under different conditions, the clinical applications of HDL, and means of enhancing HDL functionality. HDL comprises a diverse group of lipoproteins and its composition and metabolism are dynamic. In this volume, the focus is on the changes observed in HDL under different health statuses, with particular attention to the functional and structural correlations of HDL and apolipoprotein A-1. The impacts of a wide variety of factors on HDL are examined in depth, covering, for example, diet, exercise, smoking, age, diverse diseases, and different forms of environmental pollution. It has long been known that HDL has anti-atherosclerotic and antidiabetic properties, and more recently its anti-aging activities have been recognized. These benefits of HDL are highly dependent on its lipids, proteins, apolipoproteins, and enzymes, and specifically their composition and ratios. In documenting the latest knowledge in this field, this volume will be of interest to both researchers and clinicians

Abstract: This monograph covers a novel technology to deliver drugs and cosmetics through the skin in a minimally invasive manner. Microneedles – a bed of miniaturized needles is one of the most studied topics in delivering actives through the skin barrier. This book enables readers to understand the delivery of ingredients through the skin, describes a novel and simple method to fabricate microneedles containing a range of small and large molecular weight compounds, studies their physical properties as well as delivery through the skin layers. Readers will discover this book to be extremely beneficial to help them understand the state of the field of transdermal drug delivery, with extensive coverage including experimental data on basics of microneedle fabrication technology using photolithography, encapsulation of drugs within the polymeric matrix of microneedles and studying their release patternsin vitro and ex vivo . Academic researchers, pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical industry as well as students of skin science will find this account very useful in their pursuits. As microneedles grow and develop into a commercial reality with more actives being delivered and significant clinical research being put in, this account will hold well in providing basic principles and knowledge together with rigorous experimental data

Abstract: This second edition shows how long non-coding RNAs (lnc)RNAs have emerged as a new paradigm in epigenetic regulation of the genome. Thousands of lncRNAs have been identified and observed in a wide range of organisms. Unlike mRNA, lncRNA have no protein-coding capacity. So, while their function is not entirely clear, they may serve as key organizers of protein complexes that allow for higher order regulatory events. Advances in the field also include better characterization of human long non-coding RNAs, novel insights into their roles in human development and disease, their diverse mechanisms of action and novel technologies to study them
