Description / Table of Contents: IL-27: Structure, Regulation and Variability -- IL-27: A Key Player in Immune Regulation -- IL-27 in Health and Disease
Abstract: This volume focuses on various aspects of interleukin-27 (IL-27), especially its potential for clinical applications. The authors discuss the downstream signaling from the IL-27 receptor and its molecular targets in immune cells including Th1, Th2, Th17, Treg, Tr1, Tfh, B cells, DCs and macrophages. The inhibition of Th17 cells by IL-27 is vital for the maintenance of the feto-maternal tolerance and the prevention of lupus, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune uveitis, immune thrombocytopenia and atherosclerosis. However, the same inhibitory capabilities compromise the immune response to bacterial pathogens, and IL-27 is a pathogenic factor in sepsis and tuberculosis. Also covered are the conflicting reports on the role of IL-27 in rheumatoid arthritis, the effect of IL-27 on epithelia, which seems to play a role in asthma, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel diseases, and the direct cytotoxic and anti-vascular effects of IL-27, which make it a promising agent for the treatment of cancer. Accordingly, this volume will be of interest to researchers and clinicians alike

Abstract: This book discusses the immunotherapeutic potential of Interleukin 12 in the context of clinical oncology, as well as antitumor effects confirmed in preclinical studies and clinical trials in cancer immunotherapy. Due to its ability to activate both innate (NK cells) and adaptive (cytotoxic T lymphocytes) immunities, Interleukin 12 (IL-12) has been regarded as a promising candidate for tumor immunotherapy. However, despite the encouraging results in animal models, only very modest antitumor effects have been confirmed in early clinical trials. Recently, several clinical studies have been initiated in which IL-12 was applied as an adjuvant in cancer vaccines, in gene therapy including locoregional injections of IL-12 plasmid, and in the form of tumor-targeting immunocytokines (IL-12 fused to monoclonal antibodies)

Abstract: Will address an important, yet underrepresented, topic. The correlation between viruses and atherosclerosis has been a focal point of the authorś€™ work, for a number of years. This volume will explore the relationship between different viral strains and ℗ atherosclerosis. It will begin by describing the hypothesis and denoting the mechanisms of virus-driven atherosclerosis, then expanding on the subject by focusing on different virus strainś€”from Herpes, to Epstein-Barr, to the triad of Hepatitis viruses, et al€”ón a chapter-by-chapter basis. While there are books, albeit few, that cover particular viral strains and their relationship to cardiovascular diseases, this work will be unique in its scope by considering multiple strains of viruses, making it a repository of information on the topic; a truly comprehensive volume

Description / Table of Contents: Preface -- Microbiology, Genomics, and Population Structure -- Epidemiology and Clinical Manifestations of Kingella kingae Disease -- Pathogenesis of Kingella kingae Disease -- Carriage and Transmission of Kingella kingae -- Advances in Diagnosis of Kingella kingae Disease -- Antibiotic Susceptibility of Kingella kinage -- Kingella kingae Treatment and Antibiotic Prophylaxis -- Experimental Methods for Studying Kingella kingae
Abstract: This book describes the growing body of information on the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, transmission, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of Kingella kingae infections in young children. In addition, it covers experimental methods that have been developed to study the microbiology, genetics, and virulence factors of K. kingae, information that provides the foundation for new approaches to treatment and prevention of K. kingae disease. With this content in mind, excerpts from the book will be of relevance for clinicians who care for pediatric patients, for clinical microbiologists who are involved in detecting organisms in clinical specimens, and for scientists who are studying K. kingae in an effort to develop novel targets for antimicrobial therapy and new approaches to prevention. First isolated in the 1960s by Elizabeth O. King, a bacteriologist at the CDC, Kingella kingae was largely ignored over the next two decades as a human pathogen because of its uncommon recovery from patients with disease. However, in recent years K. kingae has been increasingly recognized as a clinically important pathogen in young children, and is currently recognized as the leading cause of osteoarticular infections in young children in a growing number of countries. Research into this organism has grown tremendously over the past 15 years, resulting in a better appreciation of the importance of K. kingae in pediatric patients and of the molecular mechanisms of disease

Abstract: The book starts with an introduction to and history of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), followed by a description of their differentiation, their role in the tumour microenvironment and their therapeutic targeting. It closes with an outlook on future developments. In cancer patients, myelopoiesis is perturbed and instead of generating immunogenic myeloid cells (such as dendritic cells, inflammatory macrophages and granulocytes), there is an increase in highly immature MDSCs. These cells are distributed systemically, resulting in general immunosuppression. They also infiltrate tumours, promoting their progression and metastasis by inhibiting the natural anti-tumour immune response. As these cells also interact with classical anti-neoplastic treatments, they have become major therapeutic targets in the pharmaceutical industry and in oncology research

Abstract: This book describes the demographic and clinical patterns of Zika infection and evaluates the risk of it spreading to Europe. It reflects the hands-on experience of the author, who as a physician, was faced with the first-ever cases reported in Europe. Providing essential background information on the viral vector, it addresses the various symptoms after infection, and places them in the epidemiological context of past outbreaks. The book addresses the needs of physicians attending patients with infectious diseases, including infectious-disease specialists, pediatricians, internal medicine specialists, general practitioners, obstetricians, tropical medicine and travel medicine specialists, preventive medicine and public health specialists, microbiologists, biologists and vectorial control specialists. It raises clinicians’ and travel health clinics’ awareness of the evolution of Zika virus outbreaks and the affected areas so that they can include this infection in their differential diagnoses for travelers from those areas
