Notes: Conclusions 1. Electrolytic injury to the nuclei raphe impairs learning by rats with food reinforcement, as shown by a low initial level of performance of the conditioned-reflex reaction and inability of the animals to attain the criterion of learning. At the same time, formation of a conditioned active avoidance reaction by such animals is facilitated by comparison with the control. 2. Electrolytic injury to the locus coeruleus is accompanied by improvement of learning with food reinforcement, as shown by a high initial level of performance of the conditioned-reflex reaction and rapid achievement of the criterion of learning. Meanwhile, the process of formation of the conditioned active avoidance reaction in these animals is impaired by comparison with the controls. 3. The character of the effect of local injury to the serotoninergic and noradrenergic brain systems on learning in animals is determined by the emotional sign of the reinforcing stimulus.
