    Notes: Abstract Methane production in pure cultures ofMethanobacterium ruminantium andMethanobacterium M.o.H. strains is inhibited by halogenated methane analogues in Μm concentrations and by unsaturated long-chain fatty acids or sulfite inmm concentrations. With the long-chain fatty acids a free carboxyl group is required for the depressing effect on methanogenesis, while the toxicity is increased with a higher degree of unsaturation of these acids. The direct toxic effect of these compounds on methane bacteria in pure cultures is in accord with earlier observations regarding their effect on the mixed rumen microbes.
